Big Cottonwood Canyon Silver Lake Fall Trip Report

This past weekend I was in Salt Lake City for a hot second on a little reunion trip with my best friend from college. When in Utah, I always hit up the guys from Teton Sports because they know the coolest spots. We couldn’t get an extra long hike in but when the mountains are so close, it’s easy to get outside. Shawn took us up to Silver Lake (8,740’) in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

I got hit pretty hard by altitude… and maybe a hangover too. The mellow morning hike became a really tough huff and puff in the park. Fall colors were out and about in full force, and we spotted some moose in the trees and down by the lake. It was so incredibly beautiful, when I wasn’t doubled over wheezing.

I reached out to a few friends on things to do in the Mount Shasta area. The one thing everyone suggested was the McCloud Falls trail.

The McCloud Falls trail is an easily accessible, family friendly hike. Out and back, the trail is about 3.5 miles long with a little over two hundred feet of elevation gain. The trail visits three tiers of waterfalls on the McCloud River.

Three day weekends are not for sitting around. With the constant downpour California has been receiving, there was no place dry this past weekend within a reasonable driving distance. Josh and I got out on Sunday for a little bit, and suddenly, I remembered what it was like to be outside and not sloth-y. Josh had school on Monday so I was stuck at home sans car. Try as I might, I laid in bed, watched TV, made biscuits… but by the time noon rolled around, cabin fever had hit. It was time to get out of the house. Luckily, there’s a good number of parks within walking and biking distance of where I live. I put on all the waterproof stuff I own and headed out into the downpour to Laurelwood Park.

When I signed up for #HellHikeAndRaft, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I imagined long, strenuous days climbing mountains with an epic group of people more fit than me.
