Black Diamond Dawn Wall Hoodie Review

This past summer has been the summer of weekend road trips. Friday nights we were tossing our gear in the back of the car and driving for hours. I’m basically the best sleeping road trip partner you can possibly find, and I do it in comfort. The Black Diamond Dawn Wall Hoody was my best friend for those sloth-like hours and hours in the front seat.

The Dawn Wall Hoody is constructed of polyester stretch jersey and weighs in at 14.1 oz. It’s not the lightest, but the jersey is ultra soft. The hoody features one kangaroo pocket lined with mesh to add a little more comfort. A drawstring hood lets you cinch things down when it gets blustery. Fit is fairly trim, so size up if you’re looking for something baggier and less form fitting.

I love this hoodie. It’s quick drying and super lightweight, great for stowing in a pack for when a breeze rolls through or you’re napping in the shade. (Seriously, so comfy for sleeping in.) It’s a tech piece, but works as a casual hoody without looking technical for running errands, lounging around or going to work. It’s not so great for long days in the backcountry.

The high neck is restricting and uncomfortable when it’s hot out and you just want to ventilate a little bit. A v-neck would have been super awesome on those backpacking trips. And of course, as all drawstrings are wont to do, they’ve fallen out after a few cycles through the drawer. Lastly, it’d be rad if the hoodie had thumbholes. It’s not a deal breaker, but it’s so cozy and the sleeves would be absolutely perfect for them.

Buy through Black Diamond or Backcountry for $99.

PS – paired with the Outdoor Research Petra Pants makes for the ultimate road trip cozy outfit.
