Outdoor Research Whirlwind Hoody Review

The mountains are a fickle place. Too hot, too cold, incredibly sunny, raging winds, all the weather that makes packing sometimes damn near impossible. Especially when you want to be prepared for all the things. When the mountains can’t make up their damn minds, there’s the Outdoor Research Whirlwind Hoody.

Made of 6% recycled polyester, 14% spandex stretch woven fabric, the Whirlwind Hoody is lightweight at 7.5 oz. Designed for fast and light experiences, the hoody stuffs into the Napoleon pocket and has a little carabiner so you can clip onto your pack or your harness. The fabric is durable, water and wind resistant, with tons of give so you can reach that next hold easily. A quarter zipper lets you dump heat fast if need be. Two thumb loops are hidden in the sleeves until you need them. The fit is trim and long so it’s not bulky under your harness.

I was pretty skeptical of the Whirlwind Hoody at first. It didn’t seem that functional. Why wouldn’t I just bring a shell or a piece of insulation? Answer: because sometimes that gear is just too much. Maybe the temps outside are favorable, but the weather didn’t get the memo.

For days like that, the Whirlwind Hoody is just perfect. From alpine climbs to bike commutes headfirst into the wind, the hoody is the layer that protect you from the elements while still being extremely breathable and unrestrictive. The hood fits under or over my helmet. And the color is absolutely noticeable in traffic or if you’re on the wall.

I don’t find the Napoleon pocket to be entirely functional since it’s such a minimal piece, but it’s great to be able to stuff the jacket into itself. Unfortunately this is not the piece I reach for the most, but when I do, it never disappoints.
