As of late, my sunscreen has been a standalone part of my skincare routine. It does one purpose and one purpose only: protect me from harmful UV rays and all that stuff. That is, until I went backpacking with the BullFrog Mosquito Coast SPF 30 Continuous Spray Sunscreen. This bottle of sunscreen saved my life.
Flashback to 4th of July backpacking in Emigrant Wilderness. If you know anything about the Sierra Nevada, you know that summer is notorious for the worst mosquitoes. Dusk is falling and I’ve got miles to go from my campsite. I feel little pricks on my fully-sleeved arms and see about ten mosquitoes clamped on for dear life and sucking my blood. The stuff I’d applied at the trailhead wasn’t working and I didn’t want to douse myself in DEET. I reached for my bottle of BullFrog Mosquito Coast, slightly skeptical of whether or not it would work, and I soaked myself in head to toe sunscreen. I even sprayed my scalp for good measure. I was mosquito-free after that and 100% sold.
I am never going into the woods during mosquito season without the BullFrog Mosquito Coast again. The DEET-free formula repels insects for up to eight hours and is water resistant for up to 80 minutes. The active bug-repelling ingredient in this is IR3535®. This dual-purpose sunscreen means you can leave your bug spray behind and save a little weight in your pack. That’s what I call winning. The spray has a light, citrus-y grapefruit scent which isn’t unpleasant at all.
