Last October, my Feral Female Weekend crew and I reunited to chase fall colors in the Eastern Sierra. The best thing about hiking with these ladies–aside from the belly laughs and conversation–is we all absolutely love food, because I am 98.3% sure that I hike so I can eat.
After deciding to hike no further than the closest spot we could camp, we made the prettiest snack board imaginable. Now you can create your own, too!
1. Acquire many snacks for your snack board.
This is the first and most important step. Load ‘er up. There’s no such thing as too many snacks.
Here are a few of my favorites:
Cheese
Cypress Grove Humboldt Fog – slightly pungent, melts in your mouth
Klare Melk Truffle Gouda – mild gouda, delightful truffle, exclusively found at Whole Foods
Beehive Company Barely Buzzed – cheddar with a coffee rind and lavender
Rogue Creamery Smokey Blue – slightly pungent, with a hint of smoke
Nuts: Sahale Snacks are my favorite. This isn’t your average trail mix. They come in delightful flavors and are gluten free.
Crackers: La Panzanella Rosemary Crackers have just a hint of salt and a taste of rosemary.
Chocolate:
Vosges Mo’s Dark Chocolate Bacon – need I say more?
Chuao Chocolatier Firecracker – pop rocks, but with chocolate
Chocolove Ginger Crystallized in Dark Chocolate – tangy ginger crunch in dark chocolate
Somerville Chocolate Hops Infused Dark Milk Chocolate – melts in your mouth and slightly hoppy. So good.
Meats:
Zora Bars – not your average jerky, these babies are meat and veggies in a bar, and oh so delicious.
Country Archer Jerky – I’m a sucker for their sweet flavors
2. Hike 2.3 miles into the backcountry.
We started off at South Lake outside of Bishop, CA. The fall colors were popping on the drive in. We hoped to catch more glowing leaves on the hike, but alas, they were all gone. We were stuck with this view on the way to Long Lake instead.
3. Find a suitable rock to display your wares.
Nice try, Paulina. This one was too small.
4. Lay down a tarp to catch all the crumbs.
Can’t let a crumb go to waste! Plus, leave no trace.
5. Lay down an aesthetic piece of clothing for a table cloth.
6. Put food on snack board.
7. Document the snack board for the ‘gram.
8. Eat the whole dang thing.
Kam was not pleased when it was all gone.
