When I think of redwood hikes, I think of Muir Woods and the whole Bay Area peninsula. The East Bay, however, can hold its own when it comes to these tall wonders. I don’t make it out to the East Bay often, but the Sequoia Bayview trail in Joaquin Miller Park does not disappoint.

Joaquin Miller Park is easily accessible from Oakland. We actually took a Lyft here and back after work. Because of its close proximity to Oakland, don’t expect solitude. We saw no less than twenty people in the hour that we were there, on a weeknight.

This trail begins at the Sequoia Bayview trailhead, prominently mapped on Google Maps. The trail is less of a loop and more of a lollipop. Follow the signs for the Sequoia Bayview Trail. Once you reach the split for the loop, pick a direction, any direction.

The option to your left is a gradual ascension to the horse meadow. The option on your right gains all the elevation right away. Don’t worry though, it’s not steep. Total gain for the hike is under 300 feet.

Despite the Bayview name, views of the Bay are few and far between. If you’re looking for sweeping vistas, this is not the hike for you. But if you’re searching for some quiet time beneath the redwoods, this is it.
