Outdoor Research Petra Pants Review

Outdoor Research has been killing it lately in the outdoor lifestyle department. From the Umbra Hoody to the Bryn Dress, all the pieces look good going out and going outside. The Outdoor Research Petra Pants are no exception.

Made of 87% polyester, 7% Tencel®, 6% spandex terry back knit, the Petra pants fabric is super breathable, flow-y and breezy. The pants are lightweight and dry quickly. The pants employ Outdoor Research’s standard fit—meaning they’re not too trim and have tons of room for movement or eating cake.

Freshguard anti-odor protects against smells while the UPF 50+ rating protects against the sun. Two front slash pockets are on the thighs and one zip pocket adorns the butt. Ankle cuffs let your feet roam free or you can stretch the pants down over your feet if they’re cold. The approximate weight of the Petra Pants is 9.8 oz.

The Petra Pants are those ratty sweats you lived in throughout high school and college, except grown up, classy and refined. Well, as much as sweatpants can be. They’re comfy enough to sloth around for days at a time and classy enough to be caught out and about in.

I pack these when I’m crashing at a friend’s place but don’t want them to know exactly how much of a slob I am. They’re also uber cozy for changing into after a long day of schlepping a huge pack around in the mountains.

Light enough for cool summer days, the Petra Pants are also warm enough if you need an extra layer in your sleeping bag. I love these when I don’t want to get my sleeping bag all gross, but I don’t want to wear thermals.

I don’t find the internal drawstring to be terribly useful and am waiting for the day that it falls out in the wash. Additionally, the fabric is super clingy so sometimes you have to kinda straighten things out. Otherwise, you risk looking like you’ve got a perma-wedgie. Despite this, these might be the most luxurious sweatpants that I own without being too sloth or slob-like.

Buy the Petra Pants through Outdoor Research, Amazon, or Mountain Gear for $79.
