“The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco” may or may not be something Mark Twain said, but it’s true. Summer in San Francisco is no joke. With Karl the Fog lurking around the corner and chilly ocean breezes, layers are a necessity. The New for 2015, the Outdoor Research Umbra Hoody should be a staple for every San Franciscan.

Made of Drirelease® Tencel, the Umbra Hoody wicks away moisture when you’re sweaty and keeps you warm when the sun sets and it’s chilly out. For even chillier days, it’s got thumbholes!
With a mini stripe pattern on the hoody, this piece transitions seamlessly from technical to non-technical, a big perk for those who live for pre or post-work adventures. FreshGuard® technology means you won’t smell too terrible at work or on long trips in the backcountry.
A carefully concealed zip pocket in the hem of your waistband lets you tuck away keys, credit cards, lip balm, or cash while you’re on the go. At 9 oz, this can be easily stashed in your pack or purse until you need it. UPF 15 means this fabric will shield your skin from UV rays.

This is one of my favorite hoodies for commuting, desk slaving away or hiking. It looks and performs so darn good without sacrificing style or functionality. The Drirelease® Tencel is a little on the delicate and prone to snagging side, but I haven’t had many issues with it, and I have a super playful cat. This runs pretty true to size, so if you’re looking to layer a shirt underneath, sizing up might be helpful.
The Outdoor Research Umbra Hoody is a closet staple for me this summer. Buy through Outdoor Research or Amazon for $85.
