Tioga Pass is open. Snow is melting, and creeks are raging. Summer is in full swing in the Sierra. The ridiculously wet winter we had means one thing, and one thing only: mosquitoes are out and those suckers are damn thirsty.
As a ripe and juicy human target, I’m always on the lookout for natural remedies to fight off the pesky bugs. Babytime has been my go to solution this season.
Constructed of essential oils–the active ingredients are castor oil, linseed oil, cedar oil, lemongrass oil, and rosemary oil–this all-natural bug repellent is safe for folks aged 0.5 and up. This is strictly a bug lotion, and not really a spray.
Pump the liquid generously into your hand and slather all over your skin for protection. This was tested in Yosemite Valley, North Lake Tahoe and the Enchantments, where the mosquito populations are happily buzzing and feasting away. Each application has about an hour and a half of effective time. Beyond that, you may need to reapply.
This is one of the more effective natural bug repellents I’ve used. For a while, my go to was the Badger Balm Anti-Bug Balm, which smelled amazing, but seems to no longer work for me. This one smells equally delicious.The description states that it’s soothing for bites, but I didn’t think that it helped to alleviate any of my itching.
I do wish it was a spray because lotion and chalk do not mix well. It’s non-greasy, but as a climber, any moisture on my hands can be detrimental to whether or not I send my project. I also wish it was a spray so I could better coat my clothes in it without looking like I accidentally dropped a bunch of oil all over my outfit. Lastly, sprays are nice because I’m not smearing dirt and grossness all over my face and skin repeatedly.
The bottle comes in 3.4 oz, meaning it won’t get confiscated for air travel! It is a little bulky, but I’d rather sacrifice the space than get eaten alive.
