Staying at the Ollie Mayer Hiker’s Hut

Sam McDonald Sierra Club Hikers Hut

I’ve been winging it on plans lately. I seriously just don’t feel like planning anything. I realized a few weeks ago that my birthday was coming up. Last year, I backpacked in Zion. I’d taken the day off work, but aside from that there was nothing on the schedule.

The Sierra Club Hiker’s Hut in Sam McDonald County Park is a spot I’ve been meaning to check out for a while. It’s close enough for me to not want to spend a weekend there when I could be elsewhere. But for a quick overnighter for my birthday, it was perfect and did not disappoint.

How to Create the Most Instagrammable Snack Board

How to create the most Instagrammable snack board

After deciding to hike no further than the closest spot we could camp, we made the prettiest snack board imaginable. Now you can create your own, too!

Backpacking Fourth of July Lake, Mokelumne Wilderness

Backpacking Fourth of July Lake, Mokelumne Wilderness, June 2017

This winter was a Sierra snow year for the books. I’ve lived in California all my life but don’t remember a winter where it rained for three months straight. My destination was a place I’ve never been: Fourth of July Lake in the Carson Pass Management Area.
