In 2015, Outdoor Research introduced the Uberlayer Hoody to its line up of puffies. To this day, it’s still one of the pieces that I reach for the most. Last spring, the Ascendant Hoody popped onto the line-up, as the Uberlayer’s lightweight little sister.
How does it compare?
This winter has been the winter for extreme sloth-ing. Cozy hoodies, mismatched fuzzy socks, snuggling underneath my fluffy Rumpl blanket with some hot spiced cider in hand… The Outdoor Research Antora Hoody has been my favorite pick for those casual days.
When it’s hot then it’s cold, and it’s sunny then cloudy, there’s no better insulation than the Outdoor Research Uberlayer Hoody. With enough insulation to keep you warm and breathable enough to dump excess heat, the Uberlayer is the perfect midlayer for those days when you’re not quite sure what the weather will bring. Snowboarding, climbing, cycling around the city… if you’re working up a sweat, this jacket has your back. The mountains are a fickle place. Too hot, too cold, incredibly sunny, raging winds, all the weather that makes packing sometimes damn near impossible. Especially when you want to be prepared for all the things. When the mountains can’t make up their damn minds, there’s the Outdoor Research Whirlwind Hoody.
Sometime last year I went through a purging spree. Everything I didn’t really use within the last few months had to go. Of the casualties, my REI Flash 18 Pack was the one I missed the most. Worst idea ever. I kept meaning to pick one up but never did, making do with the packs I had at the time (hi, Scrambler 30). When Outdoor Research came out with the Isolation Pack this spring, I knew that it was time for me to pick up a summit pack replacement.
